Greaser John Anderson served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of John Anderson and Margaret Anderson of 25 Isoline Street, Belfast, and the husband of Susan Anderson of 11 Steen's Row, Belfast.
Anderson had served at sea for over 40 years and previously served on M.V. Carnarvon Castle. He held the Mercantile Marine Long Service Medal. He died on 3rd September 1941 aged 61 years old. At the time, he served on M.V. Fort Richepanse.
The refrigerated cargo ship was around 450 miles south-west of Bloody Foreland when U-567 launched a torpedo attack. The unescorted merchant ship went down after 2042hrs with the loss of Master Charles Draper, 25 crew members, 5 gunners, and 5 passengers.
John Anderson has no known grave. His name is on his parents’ family memorial in Dundonald Cemetery, Dundonald, Co. Down. His name is also on Panel 51 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
