Sergeant Joseph Hunter Smyth of Blackhill, Co. Londonderry served in the Auxiliary Air Force and took part in Bomber Command raids over Germany during the Second World War.

Sergeant Joseph Hunter Smyth (816010) served in the Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War. Born on 11th February 1917, he was the son of Alfred Smyth and Agnes Smyth of Blackhill, Co. Londonderry.

Joseph died on 7th September 1941 aged 24 years old. He was an Observer on Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Z6836 GE-J with R.A.F. 58 Squadron. The bomber took off at 2014hrs from R.A.F. Linton on Ouse, Yorkshire, England bound for a nighttime raid on Berlin, Germany.

Joseph Hunter Smyth’s grave is in Section 2, Row F, Grave 9 of Kiel War Cemetery, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His name is on the Aghadowey War Memorial, Aghadowey, Co Londonderry. His headstone bears the inscription:
