Nora Hughes

Bord in rural Co. Antrim, Nora Hughes (née Qua) served as a Sergeant in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War.

Sergeant Nora Hughes (W/758) served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War. She was the eldest daughter of John Qua and Eliza Qua of Dobbsland, Templecorran, Co. Antrim.

Nora had 3 younger sisters, Agnes Amelia Qua, Daisy Harriet Qua, and Elizabeth Qua. Nora also had 2 younger brothers, Robert Henry Qua and John Qua.

The Auxiliary Territorial Service Sergeant married W.J. Hughes of Stockman’s Lane, Belfast at All Saints Church, Belfast in September 1923. In December 1945, the Ulster High Court granted Nora a Decree Nisi on the grounds of her husband’s infidelity. Nora and her husband had no children.

Nora Hughes died on 23rd March 1946 aged 50 years old. Her grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section BS, Grave 87 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast.
