Chief Engineer Officer Samuel Bunting served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of the late Samuel Bunting and Anne Jane Bunting of "Hame", Summerfield Street, Ballymena, Co. Antrim.
Samuel was unmarried and lived with his mother in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. He had also served in the Merchant Navy during The Great War.
He died on board S.S. Glendalough on 9th August 1941 aged 41 years old. A Luftwaffe Focke-Wulf dropped a bomb on the engine room of the Belfast-built ship killing 8 members of the crew. A rescue party towed the damaged ship to Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
