Pilot Officer Thomas Norman Stockdale (52486) served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. He was the son of Thomas Stockdale and Hanna Stockdale of 107 Clandeboye Road, Bangor, Co. Down.
Thomas died on 28th August 1943 aged 21 years old. He was a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner on Bristol Beaufighter LZ156 with R.A.F. 304 Ferry Training Unit when it came down in Southend, Argyllshire, Scotland. Pilot Ronald Arthur Buckman also died as a result of the incident. The plane took off from R.A.F. Port Ellen, Islay, Scotland. Much of the wreckage remains visible around the crash site. There is also a scattering of 20mm ammunition.
Thomas Norman Stockdale’s grave is in Section D1, Grave 306 of Dundonald Cemetery, Dundonald, Co. Down. The family grave is that of his grandparents John Scott and Mary Scott. Gunner John Thompson (1560614) shares the same grave.
