Merchant Navy Carpenter Thomas Smith Beckett died on S.S. Troutpool when it went down near the harbour at Bangor, Co. Down on 20th July 1940.

Thomas Smith Beckett lived in Glasgow, Lanarkshire and was homeward bound as a Carpenter on board the Merchant Navy S.S. Troutpool when disaster struck on an Atlantic crossing from Rosario, Argentina.

Carpenter Thomas Smith Beckett served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of Archibald Beckett and Margaret Beckett of Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

He died on 20th July 1940 aged 32 years old. At the time, he was part of the crew of S.S. Troutpool. The cargo-laden steamship activated 2 acoustically detonated mines in Belfast Lough. The Captain had docked in Bangor, Co. Down for degaussing en route from Rosario, Argentina to Glasgow, Scotland.

Thomas Smith Beckett’s grave is in Section 5X, Grave 21 of Bangor Cemetery, Bangor, Co. Down. His headstone bears the inscription:
