Corporal William Carnegie (WX705) served in 2/11 Battalion Australian Infantry during the Second World War. Born on 25th September 1905, he was the son of Henry Carnegie and Margaret Carnegie (née Quigg) of Ballycastle, Co. Antrim.
The 1911 Irish Census shows the Carnegie family at No. 6 Ballylough More, Bushmills, Co. Antrim. After leaving Co. Antrim, Carnegie settled in Nyabing, Western Australia. He enlisted in 2/11 Battalion Australian Infantry at Northam, Western Australia. William died in active service in Greece on 19th April 1941 aged 35 years old.
William Carnegie’s grave is in Section 2, Row C, Grave 3 of Phaleron War Cemetery, Greece. His name is on Panel 35 of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia. His headstone bears the inscription:
Rock of Ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.
