Corporal William Cummings Taylor (1076948) served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War. He lived at 205 Dunluce Avenue, Belfast.
Taylor died on the Japanese “Hell Ship” Maros Maru on 29th September 1944. In 1944, Allied raids took place on the islands of Ambon, Huruku, and Celebes. Maros Maru retreated from Ambon Island, Indonesia to Java, Indonesia in August 1944. On board were 650 Allied Prisoners of War. Conditions on these vessels were terrible. Taylor’s Prisoner of War number onboard was 558.
William Cummings Taylor has no known grave. His name is on Column 437 of the Singapore Memorial, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. It is also on the family plot headstone at Row K, Grave 64 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast.
