The historic Belfast Royal Academy building sustained only minor damage during the Belfast Blitz. The Luftwaffe raids of April and May 1941 caused a great deal of destruction in this area of North Belfast and the school had a lucky escape.

Reports suggest that around eighty pupils made it to class on 16th April 1941 following The Easter Raid of the Belfast Blitz.

The school building survived the Luftwaffe bombing intact with only minor damage sustained to windows. The nearby St. James’ Church was completely destroyed apart from the spire.
