The unveiling of the Fivemiletown War Memorial in Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone took place in September 2015. It lists the names of 73 service personnel from the area who died in The Great War and the Second World War. Of those listed, 13 served in the Second World War.

Before the dedication in 2015, there was never a War Memorial in the Co. Tyrone village. Some names appeared on memorial plaques in nearby churches but more than half of those listed were not remembered anywhere. A local community group of volunteers raised funds to carry out research and erect the monument as part of The Great War centenary commemorations.

Iain Lendrum, Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, unveiled the monument to commemorate the fallen regardless of religion or class. Among those at the ceremony was Normandy veteran Jim Jennings.

I am immensely proud of what we have done here and I am proud of the local community. But I am more proud of the names on the memorial. They are the people who deserve the recognition – who gave their lives. It has also sparked an interest in the community about the people who came back as well and we are delighted to have had a number of WW2 veterans involved in this.

To Honour the fallen of the Fivemiletown area who made the ultimate sacrifice during two World Wars. We will remember them.
