Arthur Potts

Lisburn born Guard Arthur Potts served in 3rd Battalion Irish Guards. He was fighting as part of the Battle of Normandy when he died on 11th August 1944.

Guardsman Arthur Potts died during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. His older brother Stewart Potts also died in the Second World War during the evacuation of Singapore.

Guardsman Arthur Potts (2724063) served in 3rd Battalion Irish Guards during the Second World War. Born on 18th March 1923, he was the son of Stewart Potts and Annie Potts of Lisburn, Co. Antrim

Arthur had 4 siblings; Stewart Potts born on 19th March 1920 and Selina Elizabeth Potts born on 19th January 1927. A younger brother James Potts born on 4th April 1934 died aged 3 years old. Youngest brother Samuel Alexander Potts was born on 26th May 1940.

Arthur died on Friday 11th August 1944 aged 21 years old. At the time, the Irish Guards were fighting in the Battle of Normandy, which followed D-Day.

Arthur Potts’ grave is in Section XXVI, Row E, Grave 19 of Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy. His headstone bears the inscription:

Until the day break and the shadows flee away.

Arthur Potts’ brother Stoker 1st Class Stewart Potts died on 14th February 1942 while serving in the Royal Navy. Both men’s names feature on the town war memorial in Lisburn, Co. Antrim.
