Private Bert Bates (4923643) served in 1/6th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment during the Second World War. He was the son of Samuel Roland Bates and Ellen Bates, and husband of Sadie Bates of Oldpark, Belfast.

Bert Bates died on 7th August 1944 aged 31 years old. His grave is in Section XXII, Row E, Grave 1 of Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:

Safe in God’s keeping. We shall meet again.
