Private Daniel Gwynfor McLoughlin of Llanelli, Wales met and married a Co. Down woman, while based in Northern Ireland with 53rd (Welsh) Division in 1939-41.

Private Daniel Gwynfor McLoughlin (3963453) served in 4th Battalion Welch Regiment during the Second World War. He was the son of Henry Barlow McLoughlin and Magretta McLoughlin of Llanelli, Wales, and the husband of Eileen G. McLoughlin of Banbridge, Co. Down.

Daniel enlisted in the British Army in 1939 and came to Banbridge in December 1939 with 4th Battalion Welch Regiment as part of 53rd (Welsh) Division. The Battalion remained in Co. Down until November 1941. During this time, McLoughlin met Eileen, married, and had a child. Private McLoughlin died on 12th July 1944 aged 24 years old during the Battle of Normandy.

Daniel Gwynfor McLoughlin’s grave is in Section X, Row B, Grave 22 of Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery, Normandy, France. His name is on the Llanelli War Memorial, Llanelli, Wales, the Banbridge War Memorial, Banbridge, Co. Down, and the Seapatrick Parish Church War Memorial, Banbridge, Co. Down. His headstone in France bears the inscription:
