Sub-Lieutenant David Francis Apperson Hollywood served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War. Known to family and friends as Frank, he was the son of David Hollywood and Eileen Hollywood of Bangor, Co. Down.
He attended Campbell College, Belfast before enlisting in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Frank served at R.N.A.S. Dale / H.M.S. Goldcrest in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Wales with Fleet Air Arm 794 Squadron of the Royal Navy.
He died on 15th September 1943 aged 20 years old. He took off in a Sea Hurricane that experienced engine failure on take off and force landed on the airfield before over-running into a nearby field.
Frank’s brother A.J. Hollywood also served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. Two of their uncles, James Hollywood and Arthur Hollywood from Belfast both died on the first day of The Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916.
David Francis Apperson Hollywood’s grave is in Section 7Q, Grave 25 of Bangor Cemetery, Bangor, Co. Down.
