Warrant Officer Class III David Maxwell Phillips from Douglas Street, Belfast was a Platoon Sergeant Major in the Royal Irish Fusiliers at Dunkirk.

Warrant Officer Class III David Maxwell Phillips (6976134) served in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers during the Second World War. Born on 30th November 1908, he was the son of Joseph Phillips and Ann Jane Phillips (née Hamilton) of 7 Douglas Street, Belfast.

On 20th August 1932, David married Ruth Gladys Caulfield in Belfast. The couple had a son Samuel Joseph Phillips born on 14th September 1933 but the boy died in infancy on 21st October 1933. David and Ruth lived at 87 Solway Street, Belfast.

Warrant Officer Phillips enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers in January 1928. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Platoon Sergeant Major by early 1940. He died on 2nd June 1940 at St Luke’s Hospital, Bradford, Yorkshire soon after returning from Dunkirk, France.

David Maxwell Phillips’ grave is in Section E2, Grave 55 of Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
