Private Donald Boyd served in Northern Ireland with the 6th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment when he died on 28th June 1940 aged only 20 years old.

Private Donald Boyd (5337490) served in 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment during the Second World War. He was the son of Albert John Boyd and Ada Sophia Boyd (née Bogosoff) of Reading, Berkshire.

6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment was in Northern Ireland as a territorial unit. Boyd died on 28th June 1940 aged 20 years old. He had been an orderly at the camp. Another soldier found the Private in his bed where he had been dead for some hours. Death was the result of a fatal gunshot wound.

Donald Boyd’s grave is in Section C, Square 1, Grave 1 of Ballymena Cemetery, Ballymena, Co. Antrim. His funeral took place with full military honours. Many of his regimental colleagues and local townspeople attended. His headstone bears the inscription:

He did his duty. He could do no more.
