Petty Officer Douglas David Smith of Yorkshire, England died when his Grumman Hellcat plane of Fleet Air Arm 891 Squadron came down in The Sperrin Mountains.

Petty Officer Douglas David Smith (FX/669326) served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Born on 20th November 1923, he was the son of David Smith and Hannah Jessica Smith of Exley Head, Yorkshire, England.

He died on 6th August 1945 aged 21 years old while serving with the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm 891 Squadron at H.M.S. Gannet, Eglinton, Co. Londonderry. His Grumman Hellcat plane came down on Sawel Mountain, The Sperrin Mountains, Co. Londonderry.

Douglas David Smith’s grave is in Grave 20 of St. Canice’s Church of Ireland, Faughanvale, Co. Londonderry. His headstone bears the inscription:
