The family of Private Francis George Dolaghan returned to the Netherlands several times to visit his grave and pay their respects to the fallen of Operation Market Garden.

Private Francis George Dolaghan (64880) served in Headquarters Company, 4th Parachute Brigade, Army Air Corps during the Second World War. He was the son of James Dolaghan and Maria Dologhan of 26 Hartley Street, Belfast.

Francis George Dolaghan died on 20th September 1944 aged 21 years old during Operation Market Garden. His grave is in Section 29, Row C, Grave 10 of Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands. His headstone bears the inscription:

Sleep, beloved. Age shall not weary thee nor the years condemn. Remembered.

On 19th September 1946, just before the 2nd anniversary of Francis’ death, his parents and brother Private Thomas Dolaghan visited the grave. They placed a spray of Irish shamrock next to the headstone and took home a mound of Dutch earth. They would return again to pay their respects over the following years.
