Military records show him living in Armagh, Co. Armagh in 1941 with wife Eileen McKenna as his next of kin. Records suggest the couple had a daughter named Eileen Teresa McKenna.

Private McKenna died in Belfast on 18th September 1942 aged 30-years-old. His grave is in Section B, Row VC, Grave 65 of Milltown Cemetery, Belfast.
