Private Frank Conlon (5122102) served in 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment during the Second World War. Born Francis Conlon, he was the son of Daniel Conlon and Jane Conlon (née Lavery) of 33 Roy Street, Belfast.
Frank was the husband of Ellen Conlon of Belfast, and the father of Marie Dorothy Conlon and Margaret Ellen Conlon. The Royal Norfolk Regiment Roll of Honour lists Conlon as hailing from Birmingham, West Midlands, England. Although he and Ellen were both from Belfast, it was in the English industrial city they met and married.
Frank Conlon in Normandy
On Sunday 20th August 1944, Private Conlon died on active service in Normandy, France aged 30 years old. Stories passed down through the family suggest Frank may have been in hospital before his death.
Frank Conlon’s grave is in Section III, Row E, Grave 24 of Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
