Trooper Frank Osterfield of Belfast served in 1st Royal Tank Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944.

Trooper Frank Osterfield (7912649) served in 1st Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps during the Second World War. Born in 1914, he was the son of John Francis Osterfield and Ellen Osterfield of Wirral, Cheshire, England.

Frank had a younger brother Harold Osterfield, and a younger sister named Ruth Osterfield. He was the husband of Mary Henrietta Osterfield of 10 Stranmillis Road, Belfast.

Frank Osterfield died on 3rd August 1944 aged 29 years old. His grave is in Section I, Row D, Grave 12 of Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy, France. His name is on the war memorial at Fitzroy Presbyterian Church, Belfast. It is also on the Eastham village memorial at St. Mary’s Church, Wirral, Cheshire, England. His headstone in Normandy bears the inscription:

Thou thy worldly task hast done, home art gone and ta’en thy wages.
