Major George Frederick Waddell Martin of Kilmacrew, Banbridge, Co. Down died while serving with 1018 Docks Company in Lebanon.

Major George Frederick Waddell Martin (74566) served in 1018 Docks Operating Company, Royal Engineers during World War Two. Born on 29th May 1918, he was the son of the Reverend John Dunwoody Martin and Margaret Martin (née Waddell) of Kilmacrew, Banbridge, Co. Down, and the husband of Ethel Martin of Banbridge, Co. Down.

He died on 17th March 1942 aged 23 years old. His brother, Sergeant John Dunwoody Martin died in Northern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) on 10th November 1941 while serving in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

George Frederick Waddell Martin’s grave is in Section 1, Row A, Grave 10 of Victoria Naval Cemetery, Tripoli, Lebanon. His name is on a bronze plaque in Magherally Presbyterian Church, Banbridge, Co. Down. His headstone bears the inscription:

Served in the defence of Tobruk. April – December 1941.
