Gunner George Fyffe lived with his wife and 4 children in Belfast before the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlisted in May 1939.

Gunner George Fyffe (1473525) served in 11th Battery, 3rd Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery during the Second World War. He was the son of Robert Fyffe and Maria Fyffe of Kesh, Co. Fermanagh.

He was the husband of Miriam Fyffe of 173 Canmore Street, Belfast. The couple had 4 young children. Before enlisting in May 1939, George was a member of Sackville Darts Club.

He died on 30th May 1940 aged 40 years old. Cause of death was due to wounds received while on active service. 3rd Searchlight Regiment was part of the British Expeditionary Force. The BEF fought in northern France in May 1940 leading up to the Dunkirk evacuation.

George Fyffe’s grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section A, Grave 355 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast. His funeral took place on 4th June 1940 and a Union Flag covered the coffin. His headstone bears the inscription:
