Fusilier George Hill of Belfast died on 5th August 1943 while serving with 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers in heavy fighting on the island of Sicily.

Fusilier George Hill and his younger brother William "Billy" Hill both served in the Second World War. Their father also re-enlisted having served in The Great War.

Fusilier George Hill (7043525) served in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of William John Hill and Mary Catherine Hill (née McAree) of 38 Dhu Varren Parade, Belfast. William was a veteran of The Great War with 15th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles and enlisted again for 18 months during the Second World War.

George and his brother William “Billy” Hill both followed their father into the military serving in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers and 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles respectively.

George Hill died on 5th August 1943 aged 30 years old. His grave is in Section III, Row F, Grave 13 of Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
