Ordinary Seaman George Johnston (P/JX 226247) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 1st March 1922, he was the son of George Johnston and Mary Johnston (née Leaden) of 39 Tyne Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim, and the husband of Florence Johnston of 19 Barrow Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim.

Johnston died on 15th March 1942 aged 20 years old. He was on board HMS Vortigern, part of Convoy FS49 when it came under attack 17 miles north of Cromer, Norfolk. E-Boats engaged the vessel near Buoy 57D. Torpedoes fired by S-104, captained by Oberleutnant Roeder or 4th MTB Flotilla, sank HMS Vortigern.

George Johnston has no known grave. His name is on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Portsmouth, Hampshire.
