Fusilier George Maxwell (6983289) served in 30th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during World War Two. Born on 20th August 1901, he was the son of John Maxwell and Margaret Maxwell of Woodvale, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
30th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers formed in Larne, Co. Antrim on 24th December 1941 from soldiers in 5th (Home Defence) Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Fusilier Maxwell had 2 elder brothers, John Scott Maxwell and James Maxwell. The family lived on Dayton Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim according to the 1911 Irish census. George’s father John Maxwell died on 4th November 1920 at the UVF Hospital, Craigavon House, Belfast, Co. Down. George was 19 years old at the time. Less than 10 years later, George’s brother John Scott Maxwell died on 5th October 1930 at the same hospital. George was the husband of Agnes Maxwell of Belfast, Co. Antrim.
George Maxwell died on 7th March 1942 aged 41 years old. His grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section D1, Grave 289 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:
