Rifleman George McAllister died on 7th June 1944, one day after landing in Normandy with 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles.

Rifleman George McAllister (7009594) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of the late George A McAllister and Elizabeth McAllister of 61 Berlin Street, Belfast, and the husband of Mary McAllister of Donegall Pass, Belfast.

George’s father died as a result of wounds sustained in The Great War in August 1916. He would suffer a similar fate less than 30 years later. George died on 7th June 1944 aged 37 years old. The cause of death was a gunshot wound sustained during D Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles‘ advance through Wood Gazelle near Cambes, Normandy, France.

George McAllister’s grave is in Section VII, Row G, Grave 1 of La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, France. His name is on the war memorial of Fitzroy Presbyterian Church, Belfast. His headstone in France bears the inscription:
