Rifleman George William Bell of Banbridge, Co. Down served with 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945.

Rifleman George William Bell (7046436) served in 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He was the son of George William Bell and Mary Jane Bell of Rathfriland Street, Banbridge, Co. Down.

George had served in 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles in Normandy and the Ardennes. He died during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945 aged 23 years old. Despite the number of casualties sustained by the Rifles, the mission was successful. 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles quickly and effectively secured their objectives around the village of Hamminkeln.

George William Bell’s grave is in Section 39, Row D, Grave 9 of Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. His headstone bears the inscription:

Thy will be done.
