Private Henry Barrowman of Belfast, Co. Antrim served with the Royal Ulster Rifles and the Gordon Highlanders during the Second World War.

Private Henry Barrowman (7013657) served in Gordon Highlanders during World War Two. He was the son of the late Henry Barrowman and the late Margaret Barrowman (née Jack) of Belfast, Co. Antrim, and the husband of Anna E Barrowman (née Trainor) of Belfast, Co. Antrim.

Private Barrowman enlisted in the Royal Ulster Rifles before transferring to the Gordon Highlanders. He saw action at El Alamein, Egypt where he sustained injuries. He died in England on 20th February 1944 aged 23 years old.

Henry Barrowman’s grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section S1, Grave 241 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. A funeral service took place on 27th March 1944 from 30 Medway Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim. Reverend JA Donnelly conducted services at the house and graveside. Barrowman’s headstone bears the inscription:

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember him.
