Private Henry Oford (14434072) served in 5th Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) during the Second World War. Known as Harry, he was the son of Albert Oford and Margaret Oford of 7 York Street, Waterside, Derry/Londonderry. Albert served in the Royal Fusiliers in The Great War and received the Military Medal.
Oford was a member of the Ulster Special Constabulary before the outbreak of the Second World War. He died on 11th June 1944 aged 19 years old during the Black Watch advance on Breville in the days following D-Day, 6th June 1944.
Henry Oford’s grave is in Section II, Row F, Grave 22 of Ranville War Cemetery, Ranville, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him.
