Rifleman Hugh Henry of Crumlin, Co. Antrim served with 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945.

Rifleman Hugh Henry (7013163) served in 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He was the son of Hugh Henry and Mary Henry of Crumlin, Co. Antrim, and the husband of Margaret Henry and father of James Bernard Henry of Gallowhill, Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Hugh had served in C Company, 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles in Normandy and the Ardennes. He died during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945 aged 29 years old. He was on a glider that landed in LZ-U at 1000hrs near Hamminkeln and was likely killed soon after landing. Despite the number of casualties sustained by the Rifles, the mission was successful. 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles quickly and effectively secured their objectives around the village of Hamminkeln.

Hugh Henry has no known grave. His name is on Panel 8 of the Groesbeek Memorial, Gelderland, Netherlands.
