Fusilier James Craig Nelson fought in 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers as the Irish Brigade engaged along the Pucciarelli Ridge during the Battle of Sanfatucchio.

Fusilier James Craig Nelson (14435402) served in 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of James Nelson and Margaret Nelson of Upperlands, Co. Londonderry.

He died on 23rd June 1944 aged 23 years old during fighting on Pucciarelli Ridge in the Battle of Sanfatucchio. 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers engaged in fighting on the ridge from 21st June 1944. They came under attack from artillery and shells, as well as engaging in house to house combat with the enemy.

James Craig Nelson’s grave is in Section I, Row E, Grave 21 of Orvieto War Cemetery, Italy. His headstone bears the inscription:

I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.
