Fusilier James Jackson Ewart was born in Portadown, Co. Armagh. He enlisted in the British Army and saw action during the retreat from Dunkirk in 1940.

Fusilier James Jackson Ewart (7043495) served in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers during the Second World War. Born on 6th May 1916, he was the second son of the late John Ewart and Sarah Jane Ewart (née Jackson) of 33 West Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh. Sarah Jane Ewart later lived at 19 Julia Street, Belfast.

James enlisted and joined the Royal Irish Fusiliers in October 1939. He died on 24th May 1940 aged 24 years old. At the time, 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers made up part of the BEF rear-guard during the retreat to Dunkirk. The Battalion had come under heavy fire as they fell back from the River Dendre to the La Bassée Canal.

James Jackson Ewart has no known grave. His name is on Column 129 of the Dunkirk Memorial, Dunkirk, France.
