Rifleman James Thomas Wallace of Belfast died in the Bray-Dunes area as 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles made their way to Dunkirk with the British Expeditionary Force.

Rifleman James Thomas Wallace (7013115) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of William Wallace and Bertha E Wallace of Belfast.

He died between 29th May 1940 and 2nd June 1940 aged 27 years old. This period of the Second World War saw some of 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles‘ fiercest fighting. They made up part of the rearguard of the British Expeditionary Force during the retreat to Dunkirk, France. It is likely that Rifleman Wallace died at Bray-Dunes as did all others buried at the same cemetery. If he was with the Battalion, this would indicate 1st June 1940 as his date of death.

James Thomas Wallace’s grave is in Plot 1, Row D, Grave 19 of Marquise Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. His headstone bears the inscription:

He lies in a far off land. The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended. Father and mother.
