James Thompson died on 7th January 1942 aged 60 years old. His grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section AS, Grave 114 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave for he shall receive me.
