Private John Cecil Verran of Belfast was a prisoner of war in the Far East during the Second World War. He served in 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters.

Private John Cecil Verran (4756220) served in 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) during the Second World War. Born on 20th November 1913, he was the son of Mabel Holmes of Belfast.

John became a Prisoner of War on 15th February 1942. He was first held in a Malayan P.O.W. Camp before being transferred overland to Thailand on 25th April 1943. He died on 9th October 1943 aged 29 years old.

John Cecil Verran’s grave is in Section B6, Row O, Grave 16 of Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar. His headstone bears the inscription:

Neither time nor distance can efface the memory of one we love.
