Private John Francis McSorley of Gortin, Co. Tyrone served in 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment and saw action at Merville following the Battalion's drop on D-Day.

Private John Francis McSorley (1595047) served in 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps during the Second World War. He was the son of Patrick McSorley and Mary McSorley of Gortin, Co. Tyrone.

He died on 12th June 1944 aged 27 years old. Despite being widely dispersed during the drop on D-Day, 6th June 1944, the Battalion succeeded in taking the gun battery at Merville.

John Francis McSorley’s grave is in Section IA, Row F, Grave 20 of Ranville War Cemetery, Ranville, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
