On 2nd July 1944, Rifleman John Gallagher died as a result of shrapnel wounds sustained in the Battle of Normandy while serving with B Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles.

Rifleman John Gallagher (14431679) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of John Gallagher and Jennie Gallagher of Eglinton, Co. Londonderry.

He died as a result of shrapnel wounds on 2nd July 1944 aged 19 years old. He landed with B Company 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles on D-Day, 6th June 1944 at Sword Beach. The Battalion saw heavy fighting during the following campaign in Normandy.

John Gallagher’s grave is in Section II, Row G, Grave 4 of La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
