Fusilier John McCamley of Newry, Co. Down died on 27th May 1940 as 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers fought as part of the BEF rear-guard on the road to Dunkirk.

Fusilier John McCamley (6978428) served in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of Edward McCamley and Rose Ellen McCamley (née Maguire) of Newry, Co. Down.

He died on 27th May 1940 aged 21 years old. At the time, 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers made up part of the BEF rear-guard during the retreat to Dunkirk. The Battalion faced strong opposition over the bridges at La Bassée Canal and continued their fighting fall-back towards the French coast.

John McCamley’s grave is in Plot 2, Row 6, Grave 45 of Dunkirk Town Cemetery, Dunkirk, France. His headstone bears the inscription:

My Jesus, mercy. Ever remembered by loving mother, brothers, and sisters.
