Chief Steward John Nicholson served in the Naval Auxiliary Personnel during the Second World War. He was the son of James Nicholson and Agnes Nicholson (née Horr), and husband of Mary Isabel Nicholson of Tooting, Surrey.

John Nicholson died on 2nd August 1944 aged 45 years old. He served on H.M.S. Campania escorting convoys and carrying out anti-submarine patrols. His grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section D, Grave 104 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast. His headstone bears the inscription:
