Private John Thomas Snape (4923770) served in 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment during the Second World War. Born in 1915, he was the son of Joseph Snape and Sarah Snape (née Kingston) of Brownhills, Staffordshire.
John married Ruth Lyttle of Banbridge, Co. Down. He died on 12th August 1944 aged 29 years old. At the time, 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment was part of an attack on Conde and St. Pierre la Vielle. An 11-hour battle saw 3 of the Battalions’ companies severely depleted.
John Thomas Snape’s grave is in Section II, Row J, Grave 22 of Bayeux War Cemetery, Bayeux, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
Lead us, O Christ, when all is gone, safe home at last.
