Fusilier Joseph Doherty of Derry/Londonderry was one of a pair of brothers who saw action with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Second World War.

Fusilier Joseph Doherty (6980623) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the eldest son of Joseph Doherty and Madge Doherty of 17 Holywell Street, Derry/Londonderry.

He died on 11th July 1943 aged 30 years old during the early stages of Operation Husky. The Allied invasion of Sicily had begun on the night of 9th-10th July 1943. Joseph’s younger brother John Doherty also served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

Joseph Doherty has no known grave. His name is on Panel 6 of the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
