Rifleman Joseph Greer (7011223) served in 1st Battalion London Irish Rifles/Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of Joseph Greer and Jane Greer, and the husband of Margaret R Greer of 26 Snugville Street, Belfast.
Joseph sustained wounds serving with Royal Ulster Rifles in Italy and returned home from the front for treatment. He enlisted in 1930 and served in Palestine, North Africa, and Italy before and during the Second World War. He brother Albert Greer served in the Royal Air Force and another brother Samuel Greer was also in the British Army.
Joseph Greer died at a military hospital in Northern Ireland on 10th June 1944 aged 33 years old. His grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section D1, Grave 332 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast. The funeral conducted by Reverend WEK Allander took place with full military honours. A large number of mourners attended included Joseph’s brothers. His headstone bears the inscription:
