Rifleman Lalor Smith lived in Bessbrook, Co. Armagh with his wife Agnes Smith when he fought with the British Expeditionary Force in the Second World War.

Rifleman Lalor Smith (7011328) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of Robert James Smith and Agnes Smith of Belfast, and husband of Agnes Smith of Bessbrook, Co. Armagh.

He died on 28th May 1940 aged 28 years old during operations that would bring 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles to Dunkirk.

Lalor Smith’s grave is in Section XVII, Row B, Grave II of Dozinghem Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His headstone bears the inscription:

We have loved him in life. Let us not forget him in death.
