Rifleman Richard McMillen lived in East Belfast before going off to fight in France and Belgium with the British Expeditionary Force in 1939-1940.

Rifleman Richard McMillen (7011809) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of Samuel McMillen and stepson of Roseanna McMillen of Cregagh, Belfast.

He died between 25th May 1940 and 4th June 1940 aged 26 years old. During this period, 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles was part of 3rd Infantry Division’s rear-guard during the Dunkirk Evacuation.

Richard McMillen’s grave is in Section 1, Row AA, Grave 5 of Bleuet Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His name if on the Cregagh War Memorial, Thiepval Avenue, Belfast. His headstone in Belgium bears the inscription:

Too good in life to be forgotten in death.
