Fusilier Robert James Irwin resided with extended family members in Portadown, Co. Armagh before going off to war with 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

Fusilier Robert James Irwin (7014337) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of Jacob Henry Irwin and Margaret "Maggie" Irwin (née Best) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and a nephew of Robert Irwin of 7 Mary Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

Robert enlisted in the British Army in July 1939. Until that date, he resided with his uncle Robert Irwin and grandmother in Portadown, Co. Armagh. He died on 11th July 1943 aged 21 years old during the early stages of Operation Husky. The Allied invasion of Sicily had begun on the night of 9th-10th July 1943.

Robert James Irwin has no known grave. His name is on Panel 6 of the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
