Robert Murray

Stoker 2nd Class Robert Murray of Ballymena, Co. Antrim died on 21st June 1942 when HMCS Georgian accidentally sank HM Submarine P514 off Newfoundland.

Stoker 2nd Class Robert Murray of Ballymena, Co. Antrim served in the Royal Navy and was on board HM Submarine P514 when it went down near Newfoundland.

Stoker 2nd Class Robert Murray (D/KX 134458) served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of Robert Murray and Sarah Murray of Ballymena, Co. Antrim.

He died on 21st June 1942 aged 19 years old. At the time, he served on HM Submarine P-514. The former US Navy Submarine R-19 was accidentally sunk while rounding Newfoundland and a route from Argentia to St. John’s in Canada. P-514 left the Canadian village of Argentia on 20th June 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Walter Augustus Phillimore. At 0300hrs on 21st June 1942, HMCS Georgian, a Canadian Minesweeper spotted the submarine.

Lieutenant Commander AG Stanley was providing escort for a convoy bound for Sydney, Australia. Unaware of friendly submarines in the area, he ordered HMCS Georgian to ram the mystery submarine. It went down to the southeast of Newfoundland. An immediate rescue mission went out but found no survivors.

Robert Murray has no known grave. His name is on Panel 71, Column 1 of the Plymouth War Memorial, Plymouth, Devon, England.
