Fusilier Robert Sutherland and his wife Hannah Sutherland lived in Ballynahinch, Co. Down before his death during the Battle of Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden.

Fusilier Robert Sutherland (1501058) served in 6th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of David Sutherland and Bertha Sutherland, and husband of Hannah Sutherland of Ballynahinch, Co. Down.

Robert Sutherland died on 25th September 1944 aged 26 years old during Operation Market Garden. His grave is in Section I, Row D, Grave 5 of Valkenswaard War Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. His headstone bears the inscription:

And through my Saviour’s blood alone, I look for mercy at Thy throne.
