Rifleman Samuel Waring of Belfast, Co. Antrim served with 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945.

Rifleman Samuel Waring (7021324) served in 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He was the son of Samuel Waring and Elizabeth Waring of Downing Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim.

He died during Operation Varsity on 24th March 1945 aged 22 years old. The Belfast Telegraph newspaper listed Thompson as missing on the Rhine on 17th September 1945. Despite the number of casualties sustained by the Rifles, the mission was successful. 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles quickly and effectively secured their objectives around the village of Hamminkeln.

Samuel Waring’s grave is in Section VIII, Row F, Grave 12 of Venray War Cemetery, Limburg, Netherlands. His headstone bears the inscription:

His noble self-sacrifice was our deliverance.
