Marine Thomas Douglas Harvey (PO/212333) served in the Royal Marines during the Second World War. Born on 1st March 1889, he was the son of Thomas Douglas Harvey and Ellen Jane Harvey of Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
By the time of the 1901 Irish Census, Thomas and his family lived at 28 Colchester Street, Belfast. He first enlisted in the Royal Marines on 14th August 1908. Thomas died on 9th May 1941 aged 52 years old at HMS Royal Arthur, Skegness. HMS Royal Arthur was a Royal Naval shore establishment on the site of an old Butlins’ Holiday Camp at Ingoldmells. Thomas died of wounds sustained when the Luftwaffe bombed the base.
Thomas Douglas Harvey’s grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section BS, Grave 3 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast. His headstone bears the inscription:
The sweet remembrance of the just shall flourish when they sleep in dust.
